Claremont

Just 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, the City of Claremont, with just over 14 square miles, has seven college campuses. Claremont has also been a winner of the National Arbor Day Association's Tree City USA award for 19 consecutive years. It's no wonder that Claremont is known as "The City of Trees and PhD's."

The first known inhabitants of the Claremont region were the Serrano Indians. In 1771, Mission San Gabriel was founded. The lands owned by the mission stretched from the San Bernardino Mountains to San Pedro Bay. Claremont was part of this vast tract, and many of the Serranos were employed as shepherds for the mission priests. By 1883, as a result of land exchanges and an outbreak of smallpox, the few remaining Serrano Indians had left the area.

Officially incorporated in 1907, Claremont's original "town meeting" style of self-governance lives on in today's active and involved citizenry.  The City of Claremont is primarily residential, with commercial activity revolving around The Village, a popular collection of street-front small stores, boutiques, art galleries, offices, and restaurants.

Residents of Claremont are served by the Claremont Unifed School District, which currently has over 6,300 students in its K-12 program, as well as an extensive Adult School program. There is a school for the orthopedically handicapped, an intermediate school, a comprehensive high school, and a continuation school. For higher education, Claremont's seven colleges includes five undergraduate and two graduate schools. Not only that, but all of these campuses are adjoining and within reasonable walking distance of one another.
