Hawaiian Gardens
Incorporated since April of 1964, Hawaiian Gardens currently has a population of approximately 15,000 residents. One might wonder how this small city located in the eastern portion of Los Angeles County earned a name such as Hawaiian Gardens. Apparently, the name originated in the 1920s when the area's main landmark was a refreshment stand that was decorated with palm fronds and bamboo, and the rest is history.
Hawaiian Gardens is one of seven cities in Los Angeles County that allow casino gambling. The city reports revenue of more than 9.2 million dollars and also provides employment to a large portion of Hawaiian Gardens citizens.
Residents of Hawaiian Gardens are served by the ABC Unified School District. Elementary schools within Hawaiian Gardens city limits include Venn W. Ferguson Elementary School, Hawaiian Elementary School. The Pharis F. Fedde Middle School is located within Hawaiian Gardens' city limits, and Artesia High School is located in nearby Lakewood, but serves Hawaiian Gardens.
The Hawaiian Gardens Library is one of the most well known libraries in Southern California. In 1974, this public library began with a bookmobile serving the community. Fourteen years later, the city built a 4,000 square foot facility for its community and is now a perfect place to study and catch up on some reading.
