Hawthorne

Ideally located near Los Angeles International Airport, the city of Hawthorne is home to approximately 87,000 residents.   Nicknamed the “Hub of the South Bay” because of its convenient access to practically all of Los Angeles' Freeways.  Hawthorne is surrounded by the San Diego Freeway (I-405), the Harbor (I-110), and Glenn M. Anderson Freeway (I-105).

The City of Hawthorne treats its residents with several recreational programs throughout the year.  Perhaps the most intriguing program is the Camping Program, which is located on a 20-acre camping facility located in the Angeles National Forest nestled within the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains.  Though it's not located in Hawthorne, the city owns the facility and is available for rental.  There is a main lodge area, but enclosed cabins are available for sleeping.

Hawthorne also offers 14 parks to its citizens.  Perhaps the most popular because of its name, Jim Thorpe (a resident of Hawthorne) Park offers several picnic tables, basketball courts, a wading pool, baseball fields, and lighted tennis courts.  The Hawthorne Pool is the perfect place to swim some laps or take the youngsters for a swim.

It should be noted that one of the most famous bands of all time, The Beach Boys, grew up in Hawthorne and began their career within Hawthorne city limits.  Other famous residents of Hawthorne include Marilyn Monroe and as previously mentioned, the famous Olympic Gold Medal winner, Jim Thorpe.
