Norwalk
One of the larger cities within Los Angeles County, Norwalk had a population of approximately 103,298 at the 2000 census. Located just 17 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, Norwalk was incorporated in 1957. As is the case with the majority of cities in Southern California, Norwalk made the transition from an agricultural area to a well-developed suburb after World War II.
Conveniently located between interstates I-5 (Santa Ana Freeway) and I-605 (San Gabriel River Freeway), Norwalk provides an easy commute to nearby cities (Los Angeles, Long Beach, etc.) and attractions for its residents. The city is also adjacent to an abundance of public transportation, including the COW (Cerritos on Wheels), Norwalk and Long Beach Transit, and the Los Angeles Metro, all of which provide commuters with easy and affordable commutes to nearby cities, attractions, and schools.
Norwalk is served by the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, and is also home to Cerritos College, a public community college serving an area of 52 square miles in southeastern Los Angeles County. The university proudly helps over 1,200 students complete their degrees on a yearly basis.
Perhaps the most well known attraction within Norwalk city limits is the Hargitt House, which was built in 1891 as an Eastlake Victorian. The Hargitt House is now a museum and is a wonderful attraction for people eager to learn more about the city of Norwalk.
