San Gabriel
Located in the eastern section of Los Angeles County, San Gabriel had a population of 39,804 at the 2000 census. Named after Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, which was one of the original Spanish missions in all of California.
At the 2000 census, there were 12,587 households, of which approximately 9,566 families called San Gabriel their home. Of those 39,804 residents, approximately 33% were White, 48.91% Asian (mostly Chinese), 30.71% Hispanic (of any race), 1% African American, .08% Native American, .10% Pacific Islander, and 12% consisted of other races.
San Gabriel's residents are served by the San Gabriel Unified School district, which serves the bulk of San Gabriel citizens. The Garvey and Alhambra Unified School Districts serve residents in the southern part of San Gabriel.
Attractions within San Gabriel city limits include the San Gabriel Mission District and Valley Boulevard. San Gabriel Mission is located in downtown San Gabriel in the historic core. Valley Boulevard offers a rich Asian culture experience, with shopping and dining. The Ramona Museum of California History consists of an eclectic collection of artifacts and relics from early American civilization.
