San Marino

A small city located in the eastern portion of Los Angeles County, San Marino is considered a well-educated community that mainly consists of professionals and their families.  Perhaps the most intriguing aspect regarding the city is its strict zoning laws and public school system.

The city is divided into seven zones that are all based on minimum lot size.  While it may be hard to envision in Southern California in this day and age, the smallest lot size within San Marino limits is a mere 4500 square feet.  However, many lots average a whopping 30,000 square feet.  As you can probably imagine, because of the lot sizes, the majority of homes do not resemble those in a typical Southern California community.

San Marino is considered a mostly conservative community.  Most of the economy within the community is considered “old money,” which is another aspect that differentiates the community from its neighbors in Southern California.  San Marino's city council is one of the most strict in the state, and has passed several laws to ensure quality of life.  Laws against using power equipment on Sunday afternoons and keeping trash cans hidden in the back of houses ensures that property value within San Marino will not degrade any time soon.

The city is served by the San Marino Unified School District, which offers four elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school.  The district ranked first among all California school districts based on Academic performance.
