Signal Hill

One of the smaller cities in Los Angeles County, Signal Hill sits in the shadow of larger metropolitan cities such as Long Beach and Los Angeles, and the locals in Signal Hill wouldn't have it any other way.  Incorporated in April of 1924, Signal Hill became its own city when oil was discovered there three years prior.  Now, a developed city with a population of approximately 11,000, Signal Hill has a beautiful, small-town atmosphere with a pleasant mixture of housing and businesses.

Signal Hill is named after a 365-foot hill that actually surrounds Long Beach.  Apparently, the local Tongva Indians used the hill to watch out for other tribes and send signal fires to locals.  Catalina Island, 26 miles away from the hill, can be seen from the top.

Signal Hill may be small in size, but the city council has backed up its promise to citizens by keeping the area green and designating land with a plethora of parks.  Signal Hill Park offers ten acres of parkland, which includes basketball courts, softball fields, picnic tables, a horseshoe pit, playgrounds, and hosts several outdoor concerts in the amphitheatre throughout the summer.

Residents in Signal Hill are served by the Long Beach Unified School District, which offers a variety of schools for students to choose from.  Long Beach Community College is also located nearby.
