Torrance
Located in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, California, Torrance offers a wealth of opportunities for its residents. As the sixth largest city in Los Angeles, it boasts diverse communities and thriving business which compete in the global marketplace.
Torrance has always been ahead of its time in innovations and was one of the West's first planned industrial cities established in 1912. Originally part of the 1784 Spanish land grant, Rancho San Pedro was issued to Juan Jose Dominguez by King Carlos III of the Spanish Empire. A creative and business minded real estate developer, Jared Sidney Torrance, along with other developers, saw the value in creating a mixed use, industrial-residential community south of Los Angeles. They purchased the property and hired architect Frederick Law Olmsted jr. to design a new planned community. It was formally incorporated in 1921 and, because of the vision of its founders, has been thriving ever since. Now the population is about 45,000 in 20.5 square miles.
The accessibility to both Los Angeles and Orange counties and its own beach and parks makes Torrance the perfect blend of work opportunity, relaxation and adventure. It truly reflects both the diversity of the residents and a city government fueled by aggressive economic development. It is home to the U.S. headquarters of two of the three largest Japanese automakers, Toyota and Honda, as well as Robinson Helicopters. The city also hosts numerous leading companies in the automotive aftermarket, footwear, media and technologies. The city's recreation includes 24 parks with Wilson Park being the largest. It includes a modern gymnasium, skate park and roller-hockey rink. The local farmers market is also held in the park.
The area is served by Torrance Unified School District which encompasses five high schools- Torrance High, North High, South High, West High, and Sherry High, and their feeder schools. Area districts have created the popular Southern California Regional Occupational Center (SCROC) to teach technical classes to their students and to local adults. TUSD is a participant feeder district of the California Academy of Mathematics and Science or CAMS, a mathematics and science magnet high school, administered by the Long Beach Unified School District.
