Whittier

Whittier is located approximately 12 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.  As of the 2000 census, the city's population was approximately 83,680 and is predicted to grow to 90,041 by the year 2010.  There are approximately 38,271 households and 20,468 families currently residing in the city of Whittier.

Perhaps no other group should be credited to the consistent growth than Whittier's Redevelopment Agency.  Their latest project includes a $7 million project near the city's historic and famous Hoover Hotel, as well as focusing on revitalizing the city as a whole.  The Whitwood Mall was recently remodeled and features a wide variety of department stores such as J.C. Penny's and Macy's.

Whittier offers several bus lines, all of which make stops within city limits.  The Foothill Transit system, Norwalk, and Montebello Bus lines all serve the city and help cut down on traffic day in and day out.  Whittier also offers a variety of freeways to its residents, including the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605) and California State Route 72.

The Whittler Union High School District, as well as a variety of other districts that serve the elementary and middle school aged students serve the city of Whittier.  The city also offers two Catholic elementary schools that serve students in grades K-8.
