Costa Mesa
Since 1953, Costa Mesa has grown from a farming community to a suburban city of approximately 108,724 as of the 2000 census. The Spanish meaning for the term Costa Mesa is “coastal tableland.” During World War II, Costa Mesa was the home of the Santa Ana Army Air Base. Today, the land is occupied by the Orange County Fairgrounds and Orange Coast College.
Costa Mesa is well known for its history of performing arts, and perhaps the most well known venue, the Orange County Performing Arts Center, is located on Town Center Drive. The facility includes two performance halls, Segerstrom Hall (the larger of the two) and Founders' Hall. The site is also home to the Orange County Philarmonic Society and the Opera Pacific, and it plays host to several guest orchestras, Broadway shows, and classical soloists. Free tours are provided to the public Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.
Also residing in Costa Mesa is the South Coast Repertory, or SCR, which is one of the most prestigious stage venues in the United States. The SCR plays host to classic musicals and plays, as well as local and national talent. During Christmas, SCR's Main Stage features A Christmas Carol, an annual feature that is adored by many local residents.
Costa Mesa Public Golf and Country Club is an affordable place to tee off, offering two 18 hole courses: Mesa Linda and Los Lagos. Both courses feature lakes, plenty of trees, and bunkers that will challenge every shot. Though it's more difficult to arrange, Mesa Verde Country Club Golf Course is an excellent venue. The club has hosted several PGA and LPGA tournaments.
The Robert Mondavi Wine and Food Center, which opened in 1989, is a 10,000 square foot building and offers several indoor and outdoor dining areas. The venue offers several wine tastings, concerts, cooking exhibitions, and other programs throughout the year. The Orange County Fair, held in July, offers a variety of exhibits, a carnival, rides, rodeos, livestock shows, concerts, and a plethora of food to choose from.
Costa Mesa's central location offers easy and reliable transportation. The city links with several bus lines and offers easy access to two freeways, Hwy 73 and Hwy 55. Interstate 405 runs near the city as well. Real estate in Costa Mesa is basically average for Orange County, with prices ranging from $400,000 to $1.5 million. There is an abundance of schools within city limits, 25 private and public to be exact, and each grade holds between 1,200 to 2,600 students.
