Dana Point

Named after the famous sailor, Richard Henry Dana, Dana Point offers a beautiful landscape with hills, mountains and forests scattered all throughout the land.  It was Dana who wrote quite possibly California's most prestigious book, “Two Years Before the Mast,” which is now required reading in California schools.  Throughout the book, Dana writes of his days trading in animal hides and sailing from California's coast during the 19th century.  Dana Point's population has grown to a whopping 40,000 residents now, and the average age of those residents is 39.

Doheny State Beach, one of several beaches immortalized by the Beach Boys' tune Surfin' U.S.A., is a beautiful place to swim, fish, surf, and even camp.  Doheny could quite possibly be Orange County's most popular beach camping mark, probably because of its accommodations.  The site offers showers, picnic tables, barbeques, fire pits, and even beachfront campsites for tents and RV's.

A small center showcases the wildlife surrounding the area in Doheny State Marine Life Refuge, which is an underwater park for divers.  Inside the center sits a 400 gallon tide pool tank which allows divers to get up close and personal with some of the surrounding habitats.  Doheny is also a popular spot for cyclists, who travel from all over to cruise on the five-mile San Juan Creek Bike Trail, which is also an equestrian trail.

Dana Point Harbor, the busiest section of Dana Point, is located on the PCH and is filled with shops and restaurants.  The marina holds 2,500 boats, but is smaller than Newport or Huntington Beach harbors, which is appealing to most local residents.  If you enjoy fishing, you'll want to set up a time to head over to Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Parasailing.  Touring vessels whisk you out to sea to enjoy a day or an evening of fishing, and the best part of it is that they supply you with all of your bait, tackle, rod, and reels, plus offer their assistance in catching and cleaning any fish you may encounter.  If you've ever had the itch to try parasailing, this is the place for you.  They offer affordable parasailing rides, and what better place to parasail than Southern California?

Real estate prices are as low as $339,000 and can soar as high as $10 million. All housing is worth the price it sells for, with wonderful views, convenience to shopping and entertainment and well-designed home models.  Three schools in Dana Point are available for children in Kindergarten, Elementary, and High School. Less than 1,000 students are in each grade and lower grades have less than 100. OCTA provides route circulations around the city, allowing everyone to get to wherever they have to go. This beautiful city by the sea is an excellent place to retire or for people looking for a lovely lifestyle.
