Fountain Valley
Nicknamed by its settlers because they could dig just about anywhere and find artesian water, Fountain Valley was once a swampland. Fast forward to 2007 and Fountain Valley now consists of quiet, middle class neighborhoods. Its population consists of approximately 58,000 people and is considered to be a historical town with several sites that have been restored and recreated.
Mile Square Park is a haven of parkland within a sea of suburban housing. The park is filled with asphalt paths which allow cyclists and hikers access to its mile-square area. The center of the park is employed by model vehicle devotees who attempt to launch and land their remote control aircraft. Every Fourth of July, Mile Square Park hosts a five day fiesta that includes carnival games, rides, concerts, a variety of food, and a fireworks display to cap the festivities off. There are two lakes within park limits, both stocked with bass, catfish, blue gill and carp.
The Mile Square Golf Course, located within Mile Square Park, is a wide course that is affordable and easy to walk. This is a great place for beginners to tee off because of its wide open holes and lack of severe obstacles. David L. Baker Memorial Golf Course is right next door, which is another 18-hole course that consists of eight par 4s. The Fountain Valley Golf and Recreation Center features two 18-hole miniature golf courses, a go-cart track, and a video arcade. The Fountain Valley Skating Center is not too far away from the Recreation Center, and it offers rollers skating on an old-fashioned wooden rink.
Casa de Tortuga, otherwise known as the “House of Tortoises,” is a private residence that hosts over 500 turtles and tortoises in its yard and inside aquariums. Walter Allen, the owner, uses over 5,000 gallons of water to construct waterfalls and pools, and some of his reptiles exceed 300 pounds. Visitors are welcome to view the animals after arranging an appointment.
Tourists are able to stay the night at affordable hotels like the Courtyard by Marriott, Ramada Limited and the Residence Inn by Marriott. Public transportation is available, as well as short commutes for those who own a bike or vehicle. Prices for real estate vary between $215,000 and $1.5 million, making Fountain Valley an option for just about anyone interested in relocating. Fifteen public and private schools are available for children in Kindergarten to 12th grade. Less than 1,500 students are in each high school grade and less than 1,000 in all lower grades.
