Los Alamitos

When ex-senator William Clark (Montana) bought 20 square miles of land in western Orange County, he had full intentions of raising sugar beets, which would then be processed into refined sugar.  He met his goal and created the Los Alamitos Sugar Company, which would then become the center of this new town.

The sugar beet business went  kaput in the 1920s because of pest infestation.  Fast forward to 2007 and see that the population has risen to slightly over 11,000 in this small, incorporated town that is adjacent to Rossmore and Seal Beach.  Los Alamitos is home to the US Military Joint Base, which is also where the US National Polo team trains year in and year out.  Cypress Golf Club, designed by Perry Dye, offers a wide variety of twists and turns in this beautiful layout.  The club is open to the public, and is located on Katella Avenue, three miles east of the 605 Freeway.

The Los Alamitos Museum was once the home to the volunteer fire department, and now pays homage to those families who helped put Los Alamitos on Orange County's map.  Los Alamitos Racetrack, located in Cypress, is a short drive from Los Alamitos and is a spectacular place to watch Arabian horses run, as well as bet on horse racing from all around the world.

Shoppers have an easy car ride over to the Westminster Mall. There are plenty of parks for outdoors activities like the Oak Site, which offers 14 acres of land with two softball fields, two soccer fields and basketball and volleyball courts. Little Cottonwood is another park offering plenty of exercise with a softball diamond, jogging sidewalks and picnic tables for the leisurely.

Real estate in this city can begin around $475,000 and can reach as high as $1.2 million. Accommodations for the lower priced homes can give you 2 bedrooms and two and a half baths with 1,200 sq. feet. For less than $100,000 more you can get a three bedroom, two and a half bath home with 1,500 sq. feet.  There are nine public and two private schools in the area for children in grades Kindergarten through 12th.
