Seal Beach
Located at the westernmost part of Orange County, Seal Beach is one of the most beautiful attractions in all of Southern California. Named for the abundance of seals that visit the beaches, Seal Beach is a pleasant place to live and visit. Seal Beach and its pier are often overlooked by tourists set on spending more time at the more well known beaches such as Laguna and Huntington, but the secret is slowly starting to spread about this beautiful area.
If you are looking for tourist shops full of beachwear and coffee mugs, this is not the place for you. Most of the stores on this small beach serve the locals, so you're more likely to find drugstores and a post office. The Seal Beach Courtyard Nursery is a must see and its hard to miss as well. Its entrance is a green copper archway that reads “Old Towne Gardens.”
The Pacific Electric Red Car Museum is definitely a must see attraction. Located on Electric Avenue and Main Street, the museum depicts an actual Red Car from the middle of the century from what used to be Southern California's solo mode of public transportation. These Red Cars took citizens from Los Angeles all the way down to southern Orange County.
Seal Beach pier is one of the largest in all of Southern California, and if you're looking for a great meal anytime of day, Ruby's offers old fashioned burgers and malts, plus a terrific view at the end of the pier. Residents also love to dine at Café Lafayette, Don Juan's Taco Shop, Walt's Wharf, and feast on dessert at Grandma's Ice Cream Candies and Coffee. Café Lafayette is famous for its Dutch pancakes, which are served from the early morning hours until late afternoon.
Seal Beach Inn and Gardens offers a wonderful bed and breakfast, and is just a few blocks from the beach. This restored inn is located in a quiet old town neighborhood and is the perfect place to spend a private night near the beach.
The population within Seal Beach city limits approximates to 25,000 or so, with the average age being in their mid 50s. Real estate has skyrocketed here in the last couple years, with prices starting around $125,000 on up to the $8 million range. There is one school within the area (but its served by nearby districts) which is Mcgaugh Elementary, which educates K-5th graders.
