Open House Commerce

On the eastern side of Los Angeles County, Commerce is located just off of the well known Long Beach and Santa Ana freeways.  The population was approximately 13,000 residents as of the 2000 census.

Incorporated in 1960, the “City of Commerce,” as residents refer to it as, has experienced rapid growth ever since.  Initially, the city pushed for incorporation to avert neighboring cities such as Vernon and Los Angeles from taking over and thus taxing the land as well as developing it under their own terms.  The incorporation also allowed the community to offer better services to its residents and local business operations.

As previously mentioned, Commerce’s location allows for it to provide its residents with easy transportation throughout the region.  In addition to the nearby freeways, the city is also served by the Metrolink commuter rail service.  The rail provides citizens with easy access to nearby cities and destinations throughout the state.  In addition, the city also offers its residents free bus service.

The majority of Commerce is served by the Montebello Unified School District, whereas a small part of the city is served by the Los Angeles School district.  Schools include Bandini Elementary, as well as Rosewood Park and Suva Elementary Schools.  Nearby high schools include Bell Gardens, Montebello, and Schurr.

Commerce residents have several services to choose from, which include 4 public parks, four libraries, a senior and a teen center, an aquatics center, as well as a city-owned camp.
