Located in the eastern part of Los Angeles County, La Puente has grown to a population of approximately 45,000 residents. Located approximately 20 miles east of Los Angeles, La Puente rests comfortably in the San Gabriel Valley.
The city of La Puente was incorporated in August of 1956. The name “La Puente” actually means “The Bridge” in old Spanish, which in this case refers to the bridge that was built across the San Jose Creek in 1769, while the Portola-Serra tribe searched and surveyed the land for Spain.
Besides being located just off of Interstate 5 and several other freeways, the city of La Puente is dedicated to proving public transportation to its residents, and at the same time assisting in reducing vehicle emissions for better air quality. The MTA is a bus line that runs throughout the city, and connects with other lines as well.
The city of La Puente also provides its own recreation department, which in turn, provides several activities to its residents. Throughout the year, the Recreational Department sets up several activities including its own fireworks show before the 4th of July, an Easter Egg Hunt in the Spring, as well as Halloween and Cinco De Mayo celebrations.
There are currently 17 schools within La Puente limits, covering all grades (K-12) and ages. La Puente Park is a wonderful place to get some exercise and have a relaxing picnic, and the recreational center offers several exercise machines, as well as meeting rooms for people of all ages.
La Puente is also committed to helping its residents afford housing so that it may follow through on its ultimate goal of building attractive neighborhoods. The city offers a Deferred Loan Program, which is offered for owner-occupied homes and up to $20,000 at 0% Interest.
