Open House Los Angeles

Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and the second largest (populous) city in the United States, behind only New York. Since its discovery in 1781 by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, L.A.’s population has risen to over 3 million residents and covers approximately 500 square miles of land.
There are several reasons for Los Angeles’ rapid growth over the years. It is one of the world’s largest cities, and is home to a broad range of culture, technology, and professional fields. Known as “The Entertainment Capital of the World,” Los Angeles produces the most popular entertainment outlets in music, television, and especially motion pictures. Perhaps another reason for the city’s hasty growth is its Mediterranean climate. Breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean keep the city cool during the summer months, and the winters are generally mild with average low temperatures very rarely dipping into the 30’s.
As is the case with the majority of large, metropolitan cities in the United States, Los Angeles is divided into many neighborhoods and towns, which help define its diverse culture. Some well-known neighborhoods, or communities, within the city are Venice Beach, Hollywood, and Bel-Air just to name a few.
Though not necessarily considered a “sports-town,” Los Angeles has a thriving sports market with several professional teams. Los Angeles is home to the Dodgers (MLB), Lakers (NBA), Kings (NHL), Sparks (WNBA), Galaxy (MLS), and several other minor league teams. Los Angeles is also home to well known colleges UCLA and USC, both of which are consistently nationally recognized for offering some of the best teams in the nation.
Los Angeles’ economy is fueled by international trade, entertainment, technology, fashion, tourism, petroleum, and manufacturing. Home to a plethora of Fortune 500 companies, Los Angeles is one of the wealthiest cities in the nation, if not the wealthiest.
The city of Los Angeles is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District, which currently serves over 800,000 students. There are several private institutions to choose from as well. As previously mentioned, UCLA and USC are both located within L.A. city limits, as are a wide variety of other colleges and universities.
