Coachella

Known as the “ City of Eternal Sunshine- Gateway to the Salton Sea,” Coachella is located 28 miles east of Palm Springs. The area is primarily agricultural, semi-rural and family oriented.  Coachella is 32 square miles with a population of nearly 40,000.

The city began as a two and a half square mile territory carved out of the desert. It was not until the 1950s did the area begin its expansion to its current size which includes large corporate farms and fruit groves. Originally, the town was founded as Woodspur, when, in 1876 the Southern pacific Railroad came through the area. The citizens voted to name the town Coachella in 1901, though the origin of the name is unclear. It became an official city in 1946.

Coachella has a rich, though not widely known history and culture. Film director Frank Capra is interred in the Coachella Valley Cemetery. Brothers and  professional boxing champions Antonio Diaz and Julio Diaz are originally from Coachella. The agricultural area surrounding Coachella was where the United Farm Workers union staged strikes and protests, including visits by UFW leader Cesar Chavez. Migrant labor activist Sam Maestas has a home in the rural outskirts of Coachella.

Among the many attractions near the city limits of Coachella are three casinos,  Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino, Spotlight 29 Casino, and Augustine Casino. Currently, the area is experiencing an economic boon which has resulted in an increasing population and downtown redevelopment.
