Hemet
The earliest inhabitants of the culturally rich city of Hemet were the Cahuilla tribe. In the 1800s, the area was used for cattle ranching by Mission San Luis Rey. In 1887, W. F. Whittier and E.L. Mayberry founded the Hemet Land Company and the City of Hemet. A major contributing factor to the growth of Hemet was the completion of the Hemet Dam, which created Lake Hemet and provided reliable water to the area. It was incorporated in 1910 with the city/manager form of government. It now consists of 25.6 square miles with a population of 66,000 people.
This area is a prime opportunity to get in at the ground floor. The city has approved ample area for new residential and commercial buildings and property costs remain affordable. Many companies are moving into the area at the expected growth including Marshalls, PetsMart and Sam's Club. The largest employers in the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley are the public sector. The Hemet Valley Hospital District is the largest employer followed by the Hemet Unified School District. The four largest private employers are Hilton Reservations, Deutsch Engineering, Verizon California and Home Depot.
There are two school districts which serve Hemet and the greater Hemet area. They are the Hemet Unified School District, serving all but a small portion of the City and San Jacinto Unified School District. HUSD provides education for kindergarten through 12th grade and is the predominant district in the City.
