Indio
Located 26 miles east of Palm Springs, Indio provides residents and visitors with scenic beauty, rich culture, affordable housing and exciting business possibilities. The area is experiencing explosive growth with 853 housing permits pulled in 2001 and 1,636 permits in 2003.
Indio is the largest gateway to Joshua Tree National Park where the Colorado and Mojave Deserts meet to form some of the most spectacular and unique geological features in the world. The city began as a Native American Village, a winter home to the native people who migrated to the sun drenched beauty of the Coachella Valley. The gold rush of 1848 brought a stream of settlers and miners to the valley, who hoped crossing California this way would be less treacherous than crossing the Sierras. When Indio was established as a stop for the railroad, the town gained permanence and more settlers. It was incorporated in 1930. Even in the early days, it was recognized as a beautiful haven and was often “prescribed” by doctors to respiratory patients.
The city's growth is due in large part to newcomers looking for the most affordable housing with the best in economic opportunities. Indeed, Indio affords unlimited possibilities in every sector from agriculture to big business. Many corporations are choosing Indio as their corporate home base for the location of convenient transportation routes, low economical cost of property and growth potential. United States Filter Corporation, Guy Evans Inc., Dimare and Sun World; and move-in companies: Armtec Defense Products, Ernie Ball, Ernst and Young, Ferguson, Fulton Distributors and SunScape Tech all make their home in Indio.
