La Quinta

Known as “The Gem of the Desert,” La Quinta was first established by Spanish conquistadors under the command of Captain Juan Bautista De Anza in the early 18th century.  It was the fifth resting point for travelers along the route from Mexico to the San Gabriel Missions of Los Angeles. The words “la quinta” means “the fifth” in Spanish, from where it derives its name. The area saw growth in the 1920s when a resort was established in the area as a type of secluded hideaway to celebrities and socialites. It continued to grow with the construction of State Highway 111 in the 1930s. La Quinta saw a dramatic rise in population in the 1990s and was incorporated at that time. Currently, it is growing at a rate of 110% every 10 years, making it a prime area for relocation or business opportunities.

As one of the Nation's leading resort cities, La Quinta offers many recreational activities. La Quinta is the nation's leading golf destination, according to the Robb Report and is home to over 20 exceptional golf courses, including the famous PGA West. It is also home to the largest resort in the Coachella valley, La Quinta Resort and Club which dates to 1923 and is where director Frank Capra wrote the screenplay Lost Horizon. The area continues to be alive with culture and activity with the La Quinta Arts Festival, live theater and the enchanting Old Town Village with shopping and dining to delight everyone.
