Temecula
The City of Temecula is said to be the only city in California that retains its Native American name which means “the place of the sun.” The local residents continue to make sure it protects its rich heritage. Temecula has a history like no other. It is the site of one of the most often told stories of Temecula's early days: the Temecula Massacre took place in a nearby canyon in January 1847. The canyon, just below the present site of the Vail Lake Dam, was the scene one of the bloodiest battles of the Mexican War. The history includes stories of land disputes and desperados.
Temecula has seen tremendous growth since 1980 when the population was a mere 1,783. Today the population is nearing 100,000 as people move to the area for its many fine amenities. Temecula offers some of the most spectacular scenery in California and can be seen from the air during the annual balloon festival. There are over 20 vineyards and wineries that produce award winning wines. An area so beautiful could be thought of as a vacation destination, but many are finding surprisingly affordable housing and making Temecula a full time home.
