Imperial Beach

Imperial Beach is the most southwesterly city in the United States.  The city is characterized by its beautiful sandy beaches and quiet atmosphere.  Located twenty miles south of downtown San Diego, Imperial Beach is just a few miles north of the Mexican border.

Speaking of “sandy,” Imperial Beach has earned the rights to tout its sand.  Each year, the city is home to the U.S. Open Sandcastle competition, which draws approximately 400,000 people over a three-day span.  The beach also features volleyball nets, picnic tables, playground areas, and basketball courts, along with restrooms and showers that are open to the public.  Also located on the beach is the Imperial Beach Fishing Pier, which is a popular hangout for locals and offers unbeatable sport fishing rates.

The city also features some of Southern California's best wildlife sanctuaries. The Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge, the Tijuana River National Estuarine Sanctuary, and Border Field State Park are some of the best venues for nature enthusiasts.

The population of Imperial Beach was approximately 26,992 at the 2000 census.  Among those residents, there were approximately 9,272 households and 6,453 families residing within Imperial Beach city limits.
