La Mesa

La Mesa truly is the “jewel of the hills,” with its palm trees, rolling hills, costal breezes and mild climate. It was founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1912 under the general laws of the State of California and operates under the laws of California in all areas not covered specifically by city ordinances. Located just ten minutes from the city of San Diego, it is close to many world class attractions like the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park and is part of the very notable San Diego county library system.  With a population of just under 55,000 at the 2000 census, this charming city is a beautiful retreat.

Within the nine square miles of the city, there are 14 parks, a golf course, municipal pool, senior center, and community center. There are 7 elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools and two Gateway schools within two districts.

La Mesa means “the table” or “the plateau” in Spanish, so called for the hilly terrain. The substantial vertical relief of the neighborhood leads to one of the hidden jewels of the area: The “secret” stairs of La Mesa. Built to accommodate foot traffic through rather hilly neighborhoods, the stairs have become a delightful discovery to many visitors, and a regular treat to locals. The Windsor Hills stairs provides one of the most scenic views in the county with beautiful evening hues and the smell of sweet jasmine filling the air.
