Oceanside

The land that is Oceanside was first inhabited by the Luiseno Indians, part of the large Shoshonean tribe.  It was further settled when the Spanish established Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, after St. Louis King of France.  Once completed, it was the largest building in California.  Oceanside as a city was established when the railroad was extended from Los Angeles to San Diego. Andrew Jackson Myers built the first house. 

Today, Oceanside is the third largest city in San Diego County with a population of 173,000 and still growing. Its convenient harbor, pristine shoreline, and excellent climate make it a mecca for water sports such as kayaking, surfing and jet skiing.

It is halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego making it easily within reach of California's major attractions like Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Universal Studios, and the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. Commuting to work and attractions is easy with access to nearby freeways, and the train.

Residents of Oceanside may attend schools in the Oceanside Unified School District, Vista Unified School District, Bonsall Union School District, or Carlsbad Unified School District, depending on their address. Oceanside schools provide free bus transportation for students in grades K-8, and instrumental music programs in grades 4-12. High School students are served by El Camino High School and Oceanside High School. High school students are also served by Ocean Shores Continuation High School and the Clair Burgener Academy. There are four middle schools (grades 6-8) and OUSD has sixteen K-5 elementary schools. There are several charter schools in Oceanside, including the School of Business and Technology for high school students.
