Santee

With a population of 53,000, Santee is the eleventh largest of San Diego's 18 cities. Half of the city's 16 square miles is undeveloped and is one of the few places in the county with room to grow. The beautiful rolling hills, and nearby lakes makes this city a retreat with the convenience of urban living.

California was governed at different times by both Spain and Mexico before joining the union on September 9, 1850.The Spanish parceled this region into land grants and divided the grants among Spanish soldiers in payment for services rendered. Years later, the land was sold to American settlers. Today, remnants of Spanish influence and early settlers can still be seen in the historic Old Mission Dam site at the west entrance of the City. Established in 1779 under the direction of Father Junipero Serra, and built by the Kumeyaay Indians, the dam provided water to the land of Mission de Alcala. The area is rich in history and its heritage is felt throughout.

The city was incorporated in 1980 as a General Law municipality with 124 full time employees whose focus is on public safety, planning and land use, public works, recreation, and economic development. Recently, the City Council approved the Town Center Specific Plan, a 700-acre mixed-use development straddling the San Diego River. It includes a high-tech office park, multi-family residences, open space, and a planned 55-acre community park for recreational activities.

Residents enjoy the two school districts, Santee School District and the Grossmont Union High School District which rank among the best, and have earned several local, state, and national awards for academic excellence. The schools also boast outstanding extracurricular activities from sports to fine arts. The area is home to the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, which boasts two award-winning community colleges, Grossmont and Cuyamaca.
